Seen on a hiking trail. A friend stepped on him accidently and stunned him long enough to get some good closeup shots. See "Sand Cave" from October 28th for another shot from this trip.

Oh wow. This is a terrific close up. The already staggering colour of the newt picked up across the background blur is wonderful. I am sad for the poor newt. You can see it in its eyes.

@Helen: Yes, poor fella never saw it coming. He was still alive when we left him. The ground was quite soft, so I don't think we did any permanent damage. He stayed still for at least 5 minutes though, to pose for me.
Impressive...did you post process this, or was your focus like this straight from the camera? Impressive either way.

@Evelyn: Thanks Evelyn, I did my standard processing, which is levels and contrast adjustment, and a very mild unsharp mask. The depth of field is from the lens, not simulated. This was my old camera, a Canon Powershot G3 in macro mode. the lens was just a few inches away from the newt.
